What if nature had actual rights?
Europe faces interconnected ecological, social and democratic challenges. The European Citizens’ Initiative seeks the adoption of new legislation, to strengthen the European network for the Rights of Nature and to raise awareness among the European public on the need to transition towards an ecologically healthy legal and societal paradigm.
From today, citizens across all 27 EU member states can sign the European Citizens’ Initiative Rights for Nature, calling for ecosystems to be recognized as legal persons with inherent value and basic rights. Lab Nordics is proud to support this initiative as part of a growing European alliance. In Denmark, 20 organizations are already mobilizing, with support also growing in Sweden and beyond.
“For us, this connects directly to a bigger question for business: How do we move from seeing nature as a resource to recognizing nature as a true stakeholder? Supporting this EU Citizens’ Initiative is a natural extension of our work to give nature a voice and bring that voice all the way into the boardroom. With our recently launched Onboarding Nature Toolkit, we offer companies four practical models for integrating nature’s perspective into everyday operations and decision-making. We encourage both business and civil society to sign the petition and help spread this initiative,” says Gitte Rosholm, Manager, B Lab Nordics.

The toolkit presents specific Nordic cases that show how to formalise Nature’s voice and role within company governance structures, building on the work of B Lab Benelux, Earth Law Center, and Nyenrode Business University in this field.
