Why are the standards changing?

The world is changing fast, from the climate crisis to rising inequality, and businesses must evolve too. The new B Lab standards raise the bar for what it means to be a responsible business, bringing more clarity and focus on the actions that matter most. They offer a roadmap for companies ready to lead the way toward an inclusive, equitable, and regenerative economy.

For B Corps, standing still is not an option. This is a moment for leadership and for being part of a global movement changing business for the better. The updated standards call for bold action in areas such as climate impact, worker wellbeing, and governance. Being a B Corp is more than a badge; it is a commitment to continuous improvement and to building a future where business works for all.

A new framework for lasting business impact.

The B Lab Standards (published on April 8th, 2025, applicable from January 2026) give companies clarity to take meaningful and tangible action on issues facing people and the planet now and into the future.

These new standards ensure the B Corp Certification is relevant to the challenges of today and tomorrow by introducing future-fit minimum requirements all B Corps must meet across seven critical Impact Topics:

  • Purpose & Stakeholder Governance
  • Climate Action
  • Human Rights
  • Fair Work
  • Environmental Stewardship & Circularity
  • Justice, Equity, Diversity & Inclusion
  • Government Affairs & Collective Action.

The new standards are available for all businesses to engage with and for businesses wishing to certify on them from 2026.

Note on ECGT compliance: B Lab’s new certification model will comply with applicable regulations, including Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition (ECGT – Directive 825/2024/EU), effective September 2026. We are closely following the development of the implementation process for ECGT into national laws by EU Member States. This new certification model will be the only way we will be able to verify companies under our new standard.
